“Business France’s regulatory monitoring saves us from having to recruit an employee, or even from buying expensive studies.”
Aline Ouvry, Export Manager, Canelés de Bordeaux.
What triggered your international approach?
At trade fairs, we often met foreign prospects interested in our pastries, so we started exporting based on the opportunities that emerged.
In the beginning, these were mainly French wholesalers established abroad (in the United States, Australia, etc.) and it then extended to wholesalers in general and to local or international retailers.
What were the targeted destinations and why?
We were able to measure the reputation of our product in certain markets, such as Japan, through our participation in Foodex with Business France in 2019. Japan is our leading export market and it seems set to remain so.
Other Asian countries, such as South Korea, are developing well. We also export to the United States and would like to increase our sales in Europe.
You called on Team France Export, how did they support you?
We were supported by Team France Export at international trade fairs, but also for country missions, particularly in 2020 and 2021, thanks to the Stimulus Cheque Export program.
We also regularly call on Business France for our regulatory monitoring. As part of our certifications, we are required to know the regulations specific to the countries to which we export, in particular to verify that we comply with the labeling rules of the destination country, but this monitoring also concerns allergens and the various requirements in terms of bacteriological analyses or metrological measurements.
For what reason(s) would you recommend Business France’s International Regulations department?
It’s a solution that remains affordable for a business like ours that exports to around fifteen countries and which, without it, would either have to have a quality collaborator specializing in exports or order ad hoc studies, which are much more expensive. Business France’s food studies have helped us a lot so far and are a very important tool for us.
